Who doesn’t love a little bit of me-time? Skincare has become a big part of many of our daily routines, and with more complicated steps than ever before it can be easy to get lost in the confusion. It might seem impossible to escape the chemicals used in common face washes and toners, but there are plenty of alternatives! Using essential oils for skin has been a part of beauty rituals for hundreds of years, and their popularity has only gotten stronger as more and more people look for natural skincare ingredients.
But how exactly do they work? While essential oils are organically derived from natural sources, it can be tricky to know which ones to use and for what purpose, that’s where we come in!
In this blog, we discuss methods for incorporating essential oils into your routine and which ones work best!
How To Use Essential Oils On Skin
Steaming
Adding a few drops of essential oil to hot water creates a homemade sauna, ideal for steaming skin and relaxing at the end of the day. Not to mention this is a sure-fire way to destress after a long day.
Carrier Oils
There are many different essential oils that all offer their own unique benefits, and can be applied in a variety of ways. While some oils (such as lavender) can be applied directly to the skin, it’s important to note that most need to be diluted using a carrier oil or water. Preparing them is simple; for every teaspoon of carrier oil add three drops of essential oil for a 3% solution! Using a carrier oil doesn’t lessen the effectiveness of essential oils, but allows your skin to absorb them safely and easily.
There are plenty of carrier oil options that are readily available including:
Fractionated Coconut Oil
You might be thinking of the tubs of coconut oil you can find in the food aisle, but the thicker consistency makes it less than ideal for skin care. Fractionated coconut oil has a more liquid consistency that’s light and perfect for topical applications. This oil is high in vitamin E and other antioxidants and mixes well with essential oils.
Jojoba Oil
One of the most popular carrier oils, Jojoba oil has no odour and is actually close to the oil naturally produced by the skin. It leaves your skin feeling moisturised and cared for without feeling too greasy.
Sweet Almond Oil
A fabulous oil for all skin types, sweet almond oil absorbs easily and has a moisturising effect that’s especially good for dry skin.
